The Western Wall, the ancient limestone wall in the Jewish Quarter in the Old City of Jerusalem.

The large limestone blocks at the base of the wall were originally erected as part of the expansion of the Second Jewish Temple begun by Herod the Great around 19 BC. The height of the wall was built up over the centuries. The custom of worshiping at the Western Wall began during the Medieval period. The wall became the site of Jewish worship during the 19th century.
